Blue Flame Six
The Engine is a
block with casting numbers like an original Corvette (3835911) but the
engine stamp is curious. A Corvette carries a stamp of F54YG - my
block is stamped F54X. I believe this to be either a replacement block
or the block out of a Truck. As the casting numbers are correct - I do
not plan to replace it.
I will rebuild it
as close to original as my budget will allow. I have driven this car
to numerous shows - it starts easy and runs good - so I may not get inside
it at all - just clean it up and replace all gaskets.
The engine caries
a passenger car water pump - this will never do. The corvette pump is
offset - to lower the fan to the radiator. This fan as you can see has
been cut off to keep it from hitting the hood. Although VERY costly -
I have already secured a correct water pump.

Although not
completely original the engine has the major components. The side
draft carbs are correct and in good working order. They do not
exhibit the characteristic leak most units do. When I purchased
the car it had a single passenger downdraft carb and manifold.
Fortunately the previous owner did not alter the hood to accommodate it.
This was one of the first things I corrected. |
The chrome tank along
the side of the engine valve cover is the cooling system reservoir.
This was required to lower the profile of the radiator to lower the hood
and nose of the car. This tank is in good condition and will only
require cleaning and polishing. The
thermostat housing is incorrect but not costly to replace. Overall
the engine compartment is in good shape. All the inner panels are
original - cleaned and repainted they will look like new. |
